Angel had to find a way to protect all of them from these things. Angel needed to make plans.

“We need to bring Connor in here. He’s out on his own. He knows nothing about the Sinners. He’s the most vulnerable of all of us.”

Cordy shook her head. “I gave him a phone. He’s not answering it.”

Angel sighed. He was probably just as good at electronics as his old man.

She stood up from her desk and grabbed her purse. “Maybe I’d better go out there and pick him up in person. I think he trusts me as much as anybody here.”

He started to object, until he realized that Cordy was right.

If he was to go and demand Connor’s return, as likely as not the two of them would get into a fight. A painful, time-consuming fight, allowing the Seven Sinners to do whatever they would with the rest of his crew.

Two of his people were already in danger. He wanted to make sure nobody else was added to the list.

“She’s right,” he agreed. “It would be fastest.”

“Should Cordy go alone?” Fred asked. “I could go along. Or maybe Gunn could keep her company.”

Wesley shook his head. “That might be even more dangerous. The demons have a connection to their doubles. If we send one of those who’s already been affected, it may actually attract the demons, and lead them right to the affected party—and Connor.”

And, Angel thought, Connor really didn’t trust anybody in his crew except Cordy. He didn’t want to ask the next question, but felt he had to. “What if they’ve already gotten to Connor?”

“I’d be the one to ask about that,” Lorne volunteered. I’ll keep Cordy company. Hey, it’s dark. I’ll wear a hat.”

Cordy looked sharply at him. “I’ll need to talk to Connor alone.”

“Understood. But I’ll be waiting just down the hall. And if there’s any problem, we’ll get Connor to sing.”

“All right,” Angel said to both of them. “Go now. Take a cab. Get back here as soon as you can. And be careful. You know how to use a cell phone.”

Cordy smiled. “I was using a phone before I knew how to talk. But I bet most of you already knew that.”

“Hey, I’ve got a phone, too, and I know how to use it,” Lorne chirped in. “This place is número uno on my speed-dial.”

Angel smiled slightly. “So we’ll be expecting your call. Now get out of here.” At least, he thought, he could pick up the phone when they called him. What was “speed-dial,” anyway?

“So what’s next for the rest of us?” he asked Fred, Gunn, and Wesley as Cordy and Lorne walked out the door.

“We need to know where the demons will strike next,” Wesley said. “They’d want to get us alone. Maybe change one or more of us without the others knowing.”

“Well, we’ll just have to keep our distance from newcomers until Lorne runs his next sing-a-thon.”

“And we have to remember,” Wesley added, “that some of them think like us.”

“On a really bad day, maybe,” Gunn replied.
